Buying from Travel websites

Hi, what are your feelings about buying airline tickets from websites like Travelocity/Orbitz/Expedia/or any other travel booking websites? Are they safe/reliable as opposed to buying direct from the airline as far as getting what you ordered, for the dates you wanted, and actually getting booked. Has anyone had bad experiences going this route or has anyone found this to be is a relativly safe way to book flights etc? Any response would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Martin

We've seen a few problems reported by people who have wanted to make changes to tickets booked thru a third-party website, and encountered difficulties doing so. However, the three you mention are the "big guns" in the industry, so they should be able to resolve any issues. A way to get around the potential problem is to use a search engine (I always seem to get the lowest prices on Kayak.com, which searches the three sites you mention, plus dozens of others), and if the cheapest fare is offered thru another third-party website, then I go to the website of the airline mentioned and see if I can get the same fare there....I usually can. Delta, for example, says they'll refund you the difference if you find a cheaper ticket for the flight you've booked thru their site...it's called their best fare deal. As they say on the radio, "conditions apply...see website for details."

I only use them if I am traveling on a complex itinerary (one that involves more than one airline) since booking direct through the airline sites comes up with typically the same fares minus their booking fees.

I would google something like expedia travel reviews. Alot of reviews I read were if someone had a problem with canceling or changing - there was a lot of problems.

Personally I've always booked airline reservations directly with the airline site and I know people who use expedia and other places and have had no problem either.

I too have had positive experiences with Expedia. I have used them both domestically and internationally and have never encountered a problem. I have booked flights, car rentals and a hotel once or twice. I use them more for airfare and car rentals than anything else.
