Has anyone purchased a used automatic car, in the republic
if Ireland? Preferable, Limerick, Kerry, or Clare..
if so how did they handle selling it when they left Ireland
to return to the USA... we plan on staying about 3 months..
in 2011..
We live in Chicago...
Also does anyone know if we can get from Dublin to Shannon
as a leg of the original flight..
We would be coming from Chicago
Buying a car and selling it again 3 months later would be expensive. The dealers would know that you had limited choice when buying, and would know that you were in a hurry as you were leaving.
Your bigger difficulty is likely to be insurance. insurance companies like people to have a permanent address and a provable driving record. You will have neither. Buying insurance for less than a year may also be difficult.
You may find that hiring a car is actually cheaper, but if you need an automatic you will probably have to opt for a larger model.
Yes, you can get to Dublin from Shannon as part of the original flight. Both times that I have flown into Shannon, the Aer Lingus flight landed in Dublin first, then went on to Shannon. Sometimes it's cheaper to land in Shannon, sometimes Dublin. But there are also lots of flights from one to the other.
Apart from the problems with your plan already noted, you may find it hard to find an automatic. They are rare in Ireland or the UK.
I rented an automatic in Ireland through Autoeurope.
It is no problem to rent a car with automatic transmission in Ireland or UK, but you need to reserve in advance. If you wait until the last minute, there may not be one available. You can get small cars with automatic. The one drawback, though, is the price. They are almost double the price of cars with manual transmission.
Not a problem to rent an automatic if you book in advance, but the OP was asking about BUYING one. Assuming it is a used one they are looking for, they are scarce in a used car lot.
Thank, you all who have made every effort to help us,
So, far I like the idea of leasing.. we have been
to Irl many times and have rented an automatic, however, renting for three months would be on the expensive side..
Anyone, who has further knowledge on leasing, and
how costly it gets etc.. would be greatly appreciated.
One response stated, about the difficulty of getting,
insurance, and I am sure it is, however, there is
a friend OF OURS, who owns a used car AND LEAVES it at their summer home in Irl (manual) and they have to purchase 6 mo. insurance, then when they leave after a 3 months visit, they file for a refund of the balance and get it. I WROTE THIS IN THE HOPE OF HELPING SOMEONE..
Thanks to all...
