Buying a car in Austria

I looked to see if this has been answered and couldn't find anything, so I apologize if it already has been.

I am a non-EU citizen living in Austria on work permit. I am registered with an address in Vienna along with being at my place of employment. My question is - is it possible to buy a car on a work permit in Austria?

Thanks!

Who here would know that ??? Go ask a local car dealer, "Can I buy a car?" He should know.

No need to get annoyed...I have heard several different things and people on this forum are generally well traveled. Just thought I'd ask. Wow.

There are a couple of forum members who live in Austria and may be able to advise you. But your best source if information is an official one. There will be insurance and other licensing requirements. If you buy from a dealer it should all be explained. But if you buy from a private party, you will have to figure it out yourself.

Maybe someone in the HR dept of your employer can help.

You are really in the wrong place to ask this question. This is a group of primarily Americans who live in the US and talk about their trips to Europe. They would have no clue how to answer your question. I (non-EU) do live in Vienna, but haven’t driven or owned a car in 11 years (yes!). I suggest you join one of the several groups on Facebook for Viennese expats and ask your question there, or contact the Expat Center.
