Buy tix now or later?

I am traveling in Sept/Oct and was wondering if I should buy my train tix now or buy them as I travel through Europe. Also, do Italian trains offer youth discounts? I went on trenitalia and they only gave the adult fare. And should I book my train tix on each of the country's train website like Trenitalia, TGV, and Thalys or do you suggest other websites? And lastly, which website should i go to buy tix from Barcelona-Nice? Thanks!!

The answer will depend on which routes you are taking, and if you are taking any night trains or other specialty trains. Depending on the countries you are going to and the specific train routes, it may end up being less expensive to get a rail pass. Have you investigated the passes yet?

I have gone back and forth between getting a rail pass or P2P tix..i looked up all of the fares (except Barcelona-Nice) and found that they add up to approx. $385 compared to a $489 railpass not including reservations..i will be traveling to London, Brussels, Amsterdam, Tours, Bordeaux, Barcelona, Nice, Vernazza, Venice, Florence, and Rome with stops along the way to Pisa, Bologna, Verona, and Siena. I will be taking high speed trains and regional but no night trains

I would buy p2p when I get there. My friend and I are also going in Sept; Paris, Amst, Italy and Spain. The only advance ticket I considered was the overnight from Paris because of the couchette, but we are going to fly cheap Easyjet or Ryan (try www.skyscanner) for couple of legs instead, especially from Italy to Spain. Maybe we could meet up. What kind of lodging are you staying in? Deb
