I can get a airfare on Luthansa from SEA to Munich and return from Zurich in May for $500rt. Is this a good price or should I wait for it to go down? Have no clue on airfares. Leaving May 10 and returning May 23. Thanks
It sounds too good to be true. If it is true, buy it immediately. Normal price for flying this route in May is $1500 plus minus, rather plus.
Ilja beat me to it! It's not a good deal, or even a great deal, but a PHENOMENAL deal. Grab it before it disappears - if it hasn't disappeared already!
greg, that's less than I paid in 1988.
Do not delay on your xtra low fare, it will not last long. Last summer I pd 3 x that for zurich, return Geneva to SFO.
GRAB IT NOW! Paid $1600 last may sfo to amsterdam. Buy it and don't look back, with the euros almost even have a great trip
You're asking if this price is good? What luck! Well, unless you're waiting to pay 3x as much. As everyone says here, grab it! I've paid 1,500 SFO to FRA. The last time I paid under $500 was on TWA SFO to Paris Orly in 1973. r/t.
Are you on a group tour or traveling independently? If you can be somewhat flexible as to your arrival date in Zurich, what I type below may not be that big of a deal, but if you have to be there within a day or two of a certain date in May, it might give you reason for a little extra caution.
The reason I ask is that TravelGuard (trip insurance) lists Luthansa on its Strike List (pilots) as an exclusion, meaning they would not pay a claim if a Luthansa pilot strike causes the problem. If you have already purchased the airline tickets, and if you want trip insurance, you might search for a trip insurance company that would not have THAT particular strike exclusion with that particular airline (just in case). There evidently has been concern with strikes with that particular airline for a while now.
You can find this on their web site www.travelguard.com, click on Customer Service, then click on the Strike List.
Otherwise, it sounds like an incredible $$$ deal.
What about a link to the source of this bargain so others can try their luck? Thanks in advance.
I have no idea where the OP found his deal, but I see fares in that price range on Google flights, departing on May 8 and returning on May 22--dates chosen at random.
Bay Area folks, hit the keyboard!
The Lufthansa website has a number of roundtrip flights for those days posted as economy at $196 to Munich and $317 back to Seattle.
PS I am currently seeing Kansas City to London at around $800-900 r/t on Delta and American (vs 1300-1500 last week), so guessing that its even better from gateway cities.
Thanks for everyone's input. It is a done deal!! Booked and paid for this morning. I booked direct on Luthansa's website. Able to get window seats that I want on all trips. Also great times on all flights. Though I must say, did alot of research and price comparing on different airlines with different city matches. Actually, it costs LESS than if I booked RT from Munich, Zurich, or Frankfur even though on the way back I transfer at Munich!!. American and United had cheaper prices but I wanted Luthansa. I do all my research on Kayak and then go to individual airline websites. I won't book except through airline websites because seat selection is very important to me. For some reason, only SEA has these super low fares!! I live in Portland but it is several hundred dollars more to fly out of PDX. Able to get rooms both ways at SEATAC for $44 total(hotel web special).
You certainly hit the jackpot. It is increasingly clear that you need to either set up a lot of fare alerts (for anywhere you might want to go) or hit your favorite airline-booking website daily, looking for special bargains. And you need to be prepared to jump on any deal you like, because swings of a few hundred dollars from day to day are pretty common.
Thank you, greg9542, I am trying to find flights from Seattle to Florence for May and prices are sky high. I will try to use your information hopefully with some luck.
Seems like prices dipped this week.
A few fares I've found for Munich during Oktoberfest:
Houston (one-stop through AT on Delta, with very short layover) for less than $750
Boston for less than $500
But now if you get one of these deals.

Ilja, Milan looks quite a bit better (though nothing approaching $500). Might be worth it.
