Busses/Trains in Bavaria

Reading RS book on Germany/Bavaria he makes it sound like getting around the Bavaria area would be better by car. I really don't want to rent a car. How easy is is it to get around Bavaria by bus or train?

It might depend on where you are going. Bavaria is a pretty big state. On the other hand, I have never felt the need to have a car. Even little towns have train stations, and the even smaller ones will have bus service. I don't think you need to drive anywhere in Germany. There are some who like to and more power to them, but it isn't a necessary thing. Personally, I would find that a lot would be missed if I couldn't sit in a train and admire the scenery as opposed to gripping a steering wheel trying to figure out where to go on a map, or getting stuck in one of Germany's notorious traffic jams on the auto bahn. I arrive at my destinations completely unstressed and relaxed. It can also be a lot cheaper without a car, especially if you use the Laender tickets.

Thanks Jo,
We really want to stay in Fussen or Ruette. I really want to go to the Zugpite. I was just wondering how easy it is to get there by train/bus. I would prefer to stay in Ruette. But RS makes it sound like its hard to get there with public transport.

If you stay in Reutte, there is direct train service into Garmisch-Partenkirchen, either hourly or every two hours. There is also bus service from Reutte to Fuessen, but it generally runs during "rush hour"; I think the service mid day is a little sparse. However, Pfronten is just a few miles up the track, back in Germany, and there are some buses from there to Fuessen.

If you stay in Fuessen, there is a bus to Garmisch-Partenkirchen via Oberammergau, or you can take one of the morning buses to Reutte or Pfronten and the train from there.

You can find schedules, including buses, on German Rail website. You can also find the bus schedules on the Regional Verkehr Oberbayern website, www.rvo-bus.de (albeit in German).

Wendy,
We were in Fuessen last July and found it to be a very charming town so don't be scared away by Rick's opinion that Reutte is nicer. The trains were very easy to use.

"don't be scared away by Rick's opinion that Reutte is nicer."

Wendy didn't say she was scared away by Rick saying Reutte was nicer; what she said was, "RS makes it sound like its hard to get to Reutte with public transport."

"RS makes it sound like its hard to get to Reutte with public transport"

With all due respects to our benefactor (RS), that statement kind of makes me wonder. What cold be easier? You go to the bus stop, the bus comes, you get on, you travel to your destination, you get off. Isn't that the way we travel via public transportation anywhere? Between 9 o'clock in the morning and 6:30 in the evening, there are 12 connections (six of them by direct, no change bus) from Reutte to Fuessen.
