Busses to Siena, Sorrento

Hi,

I have just read that a bus is the best way to go from Florence to Siena if you are not renting a car. The logic seems good...the train station is outside the city, and we are staying in the historic center. A couple things I am unclear on:

1). While in Siena, we will make a day trip to Pisa. Is the bus the best way to do that as well (again, assuming no car).

2). After Siena, we are on to Sorrento. The maps show rail lines from siena to Sorrento, but it looks like there might be a bunch of transfers. Is this the case, is that a hassle for an unseasoned traveler and if so are there alternatives to trains I should look at.

3). From Sorrento, we are on to Rome to catch a flight home. Same basic question: is the train the best way?

4). How much train riding makes it better to buy some sort of pass as opposed to individual tickets (we are traveling with three, myself included).

Cheers!

  1. Train is faster, bus makes many stops. That being said, why not take your trip to Pisa from Florence instead of Siena? It's only about 45 min by train from Florence to Pisa, great day trip (we did this) Do you have at least a day/night in Florence, or are you based in Siena?
  2. Again, train for this longer trip. faster, less stops. You will have to change trains, but you probably will also have to change buses! Take the train.
  3. We ended up taking the bus because when we were there, they found WWII unexploded bombs by the tracks, and the route was shut for a day. The bus trip took 4 hours (about the same as the train) many stops, and we had to take a taxi to get to Termini from the bus station.
  4. Just buy your tickets as needed. No big discount for a pass, and it's just easier to plan your day trips too. No need to purchased round trip, buy as you travel.

We've traveled both ways, but like the train better for longer trips. You can get up and walk, stretch legs on the train.
