I am still at home in Colorado and would like to book a bus from Paris to Metz for the last week in October but don't seem to be able to put that together. just not finding the information I need. Nancy
Is there any reason you don't like the trains? Hourly departures from Gare de L'Est and it takes 1 hr 25 minutes, way faster than any bus could make it.
I just thought it would be better to see the country side at a slower pace. otherwise maybe it would be nice to get there and then take a bus or rent a car to see the countryside? have you been to Metz? Nancy
Well yes, I blasted by at 300 km/hr on the way to Strasbourg. The only interesting country views are the hillsides covered with champagne grapes to the south of Reims. They're far enough away to get a good view even at that speed. Get a window seat on the right side of the train on the upper level. Its a double decker train. Other than that, the scenery could be Wisconsin.
thanks Sam good to know, however I've spent many a summers in the north woods of Wisconsin and there is nothing prettier. :) N
Hi, As pointed out above the ride from Paris to Metz can be done by taking the TGV. You can also take the regional TER train, it takes ca 4 hrs.
the hour and 25 minute train is sounding better all the time. You've been a big help. Metz and Luxembourg region is where my fathers side of the family is from. Due constant chaotic turmoil in the area of Alsace-Lorraine switching national authority every few years from France to German rule my ancestors came to America in the mid 1880s and landed in Dodgeville WI. anyway I want to spend a little time there and sort of "drink it in" for at least a couple of days. n
Metz is a pleasant small city with a nice cathedral, some parks, and good train connections. The station itself is considered architecturally significant with a handsome tower. However it is about a 15-minute walk to the city centre. Near the station is the first auxiliary branch of the Pompidou museum in Paris, distinctive in its design if not quite so startling as its parent's steam-plant appearance. Exhibitions based on the Pompidou's archive collections are featured. http://www.centrepompidou-metz.fr/en/welcome The cuisine and architecture in Metz are flavoured by its Belgian and German neighbours. Among the cafes it has lots of cozy pubs where you can drink beer like its neighbours do. Metz is well worth a full day visit, however you get there.
Here is what the city tourism site says about getting there: http://tourisme.metz.fr/en/commun/acces/acces.php
Nancy, We have just visited Metz this past May and it is beautiful! The cathedral there rivals Notre dame and all the shops and side streets are just perfectly France! While there take the train ride that tours the city, it cost only a few euros and takes you thru the whole town. We drove from Paris to Metz and instead of taking the auto route we took the side roads. The trip was not long and it was nice to be able to see the towns along the way. Verdun is one of those cute towns you can side trip to. Once leaving Paris the driving wasn't difficult so our suggestion is to drive if at all possible simply because it offers you more freedom!
I so appreciate all of your comments concerning Metz. I can't wait to experience all of it. Respectfully Nancy
If you're looking for lodging nearby Metz, for a true French experience, visit Maison d'hôtes la Renommière in Vigneulles-lès-Hattonchâtel (just SW of Metz). Great family run B&B close to Verdun, St. Mihiel American Cemetery, and other great landmarks. Their rooms and food were incredible. I also vote for taking the train from Paris.
