we will be making a base in Avignon, France in late September and want to take small local buses, not tourist buses, or trains are fine- to several towns for day trips : St. Remy, L'Isle-sur-la Sorgue,Carpentras and maybe Vaison-la-Romaine. can anyone suggest a good website ( I speak no French) or give personal experience for that area? trying to avoid a car rental. merci!

This won't be much help, but there are buses from Avignon that go to St. Remy and (I believe) Carpentras, not sure about Vaison. L'Isle-sur-la Sorgue is served by rail from Avignon. Here's a web site, all in French, sorry about that! http://www.vaucluse.fr/655-transport-scolaire.htm
This website click here will show you where the trains do and do not run in Provence. It's the #1 site for Europe train schedules - if you experiment with the site features for a couple of minutes you'll see how to use it to determine if trains go where you want to go and, if so, what the frequency/schedules are. In general, the Provencal countryside is not regularly served by rail, medium size towns may or may not be regularly served by rail, and the larger Provencal towns are well served by rail.
