Bonjour all! Does anyone have any experience taking the 171 bus from Port de Severes to Versailles? I was looking at this web site http://parisbytrain.com which is very helpful btw and saw instructions to using the bus instead of the RER. I feel pretty comfortable with the metro and RER and thought this may be a different experience. It appears to be on 1.7e also which is much cheaper. We leave on Monday and are so excited. Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

I have taken that bus. I've also taken the train. I frankly prefer the bus because I love the sightseeing along the way. Guys playing boules... the Speed Rabbit Pizza guy coming in to work on his bike... folks out shopping... getting a peek into back gardens... As I recall, the bus also stops closer to the chateaux than the train does. It may take slightly longer than the train - but I don't think so. I think it took around half an hour. Anyway, I was so involved with staring around and absorbing the atmosphere that I did not notice the time. I would definitely take the bus again. And yes, it was cheaper.
Thanks for the help, we are going to give it a try. We were also thinking of going to Chartes on another day. Are there any bus options you know of? All the information I can find indicates a train is the only way.
I've only taken the train to Chartres, never the bus. I imagine there is one - but since the train trip is over an hour, the bus trip is likely almost 2 hours. On the other hand, if there is a bus, I will bet it is cheaper. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
