We want to travel from Dubrovnik to Thessaloniki and are willing to go to some pretty small towns to do this - but we do not want to have to travel backward to catch a fast train. We hear the border crossing into Greece is not easy - so we also want information on the easiest way to do this - do we have to take a taxi or is it possible to do this on public transport. Thanks for any help that is given. Janet Jones
It isn't easy. You can get some insight here:

Jeff is right ... it's not easy. It takes time and an adventurous spirit ... this part of the world has no fast trains. The Balkanology article is helpful, as are the Lonely Planet Thorntree forums. We traveled from Dubrovnik to Athens a few years ago. We took a bus from Dubrovnik to Budva, Montenegro. We found a tourist day trip bus that was going to Tirana, Albania the next day, so we took that trip and got off in Tirana (the rest of the people on the bus returned to Budva). We stayed 2 nights in Tirana (we hadn't been sure how long it would take to get there, so we gave ourselves a cushion). From Tirana, we flew to Athens. So it's easy to get to Budva. It's a little more challenging to get to Tirana from Budva or Ulcinj. From Tirana to Thessaloniki, you could fly or take an interesting trek across Albania and Macedonia. If you have more money than time, you could fly from Dubrovnik to Thessaloniki but it's expensive... I went to Kayak and picked a random date in September and it's $571 for almost an 8 hour flight. Good luck!
