I want to cross the border into France before renting a car. What's the easiest way to get from Barcelona to Perpignan?

I took the train from Barcelona to Perpignan to pick up my car. Very easy. I was told there was a surcharge to pick the car up at the train station, so I thought I would save a few bucks and pick it up at what was called a downtown location. Big mistake. It was definitely not downtown and I had to pay 30€ for a cab to take me there. Just get your car at the train station and be done with it! I rented through Auto Europe and the car was with Europcar.

Since our trip a couple of summers ago, I read that there's a fast train Figueres-Perpignan. So train ro Figueres, then to Perpignan seems the easiest.

Taking the Spanish train to Figueres, you then change to a French train there that takes you to Perpignan.
