Bus from Munich to Prague

The 2013 Germany book recommends taking a bus from Munich to Prague rather than the train. The price is quoted at $4 (with a Eurorail pass). I plan to purchase an 8-day Eurorail pass. Will the bus ticket use a pass day?

Of course. Probably the best way is the train to Nuremberg and then the bus to Prague. With advance purchase discount that probably would be cheaper than one day on your pass. Are you sure you can save money with an 8 day pass? With discount tickets and extra fees for a pass it is hard to make a pass pay unless doing a lot of long distance trains.

Check Deutsche Bahn website. The fastest and the cheapest is bus operated by DB (German railroad). Bus leaves from the Main train station in Munich and arrives to the Main train station in Prague.

You're hoping the bus to Prague will cost only $4 and not use a pass day? Nice try! According to the Eurail website, it will take a day of your pass and the supplement for the bus is 10€ in 2nd class, 15€ in 1st. For that you must have a Global pass or a pass including both Germany and the Czech Republic. A reservation is mandatory and the cost is included in the fare or supplement. Since Frank took the train to Nürnberg and the bus to Prague, German Rail has added a direct bus from Munich to Prague. If you book far enough in advance, you can get a non-changeable discount fare for the bus, with limited refundability, for as little as 29€/person in 2nd class. If your pass includes both Germany and the Czech Republic, the regional trains to Prague will take about an hour more but cost you nothing but a pass day. Without a pass, you can buy a Bayern-Böhmen ticket at the station on the day of travel for 25€ for one person, 4,50€ each added person to 5 total. That will allow you to go from anywhere in Bavaria to Pilsen on any regional train. On the train in the Czech Republic (or in the station in Pilsen) you can buy a Czech Rail ticket to Praque for 100 Koruna (about 4€).

Thanks so much for all of the helpful information. I thought the bus ticket without using a pass day was unlikely. Wishful thinking!
