Bus (Coach) Between Paris and Amsterdam?

In his Amsterdam and the Netherlands book, Rick mentions Eurolines, a bus (coach) service between Amsterdam and Paris. Has anyone tried it?

We're going to be in Paris next May, and want to get to the Netherlands, probably Amsterdam, Haarlem, or Leiden. I checked out the Eurolines website, and non-refundable tickets from Paris to Amsterdam are €19 each! (Refundable tickets are about €40.) They have overnight runs, but I think taking a bus during the day would be a wonderful way to see the countryside. We did this a few years ago in Spain, taking the bus from Madrid to Granada and back, and we loved it.

Any thoughts? Has anyone tried this?

Thanks.

I took it last in 2008 my traveling hostel staying student budget days. And by my own recollection it was not a wonderful way to see the countryside. All I remember was seeing the highway. It is about 4 hours longer than Madrid to Granada more or less

It is hardly the most interesting part of Europe. The French part of the trip is not too bad, but after that it soon enters very heavily built-up areas. Better take the Thalys train, which does it in 3 hours. Advance-bought tickets can be as cheap as EUR 35.

The Thalys is not much more expensive if purchased in advance, faster, more comfortable as it has the ability to get up and move around and ability to get food if you need it. You also get to see the countryside.

Jane,
I'm going to Paris next April and plan to take the Thalys train to Amsterdam. You can buy advance tickets 90 days before your departure date. And, it will be a reserved seat. The train goes from the Gare du Nord station in Paris to the Centraal station in Amsterdam - I have gathered from my research.

My friend and I decided not to fly and the train is easy and fast. I don't think it's as scenic as we would wish but at least it's only 3 - 4 hours.
Hope this helps you.

Well, I guess I needed to hear all this. Evidently when I checked Thalys prices last night, I was off kilter somehow, because I found prices well up into 3 figures. But I just checked again, and sure enough, €35 for non-changeable tickets, €67 for changeable.

That's cheaper than the cheapest airfare, and the cheapest flights leave at very inconvenient times, whereas there are Thalys departures all day.

We took Thalys from Paris to Brussels several years ago, and enjoyed the ride. So it looks like we'll do it again.

Thanks, all. See, this is why I hang out here!

Edit to add: And Judy B, yes and no about how scenic it is. You go through some lovely country, at least as far as Brussels, but the train goes so fast you can't really enjoy the scenery. But it is very comfortable, and very convenient. Getting the train at Paris Nord was a snap.

Northern France is green, lush and flat. It is like most of Illinois, beautiful if you are a farmer.

SNCF operates bus, as well as train, service Paris-Amsterdam. It uses its own buses and also books Eurolines. The ride takes at least 7Hr30. In terms of comfort, speed, and relatively unexciting countryside, there's no question how I would travel.
