I'm going to be arriving in Milan on Thursday (hopefully) and taking the bus from the airport to Milano Centrale train station and then onto Varenna. What is the best way to keep your luggage safe? Also does anyone know if most trains in Italy have luggage racks overhead or in a common area at the end of the car? Is there a difference between 1st and 2nd class travel as far as the luggage situation is concerned?

For both 1st and 2nd class there will be racks above your seat that will hold carry-on size bags and shelves/bins at the end of the car for large bags. Use a bicycle cable lock to secure your bags if you leave them at the end of the car.

The storage capacity for first and second class is nearly the same. However, since first class has about a quarter less seats and many fewer riders, the amount of space available for storage is much greater. We lock our bags and use a retractable steel cable to secure to something or to each other. Luggage theft is not a major problem.
