Bus and/or subway in Rome

We are headed to Rome next week for our first trip to Europe. We are planning on doing self guided walking tours and want to know best way to get to different areas of Rome. Is is best to use the buses or subways? Staying be the Termil. Any suggestions, hints? Thanks much.

For the most part it is easy to walk. Core area is small and easy to walk because that is what they were doing 2000 years ago. Bus and trams work pretty well. There is only two subway lines and not very useful for the core areas since they don't go there. Ok for the outlying areas.

I've used both. As the previous poster said the metro is not always convenient. Also often it is so full that I'm uncomfortable getting on and I end up going up and taking a bus anyway. I quite like the buses in Rome and have used them very extensively on both my trips there. Can be helpful to get a bus map from your hotel or the tourist office as there are so many lines that it can get confusing!

Kathe, I just returned from Rome a few days ago, and used a combination of Metro, Bus and walking to get around. I was also staying in the Termini area. Which method or combination of methods to use will depend to a great extent on where you're going. For example, if you're planning to visit the Colosseum, I'd suggest Metro as it's only about three stops from Termini and the station is right across the street from the Colosseum. On days when I was planning to travel a lot, I bought a B.I.G. ticket (Biglietto giornaliero), which is good for the entire day (until midnight) for Buses, Subways and Metro. The cost was €4 which I thought was very reasonable. DON'T forget to validate the ticket the first time you use it! On Buses there's a small yellow box right behind the Driver where you can validate. One point to note though. During my stay, the Hotel owner pointed out to me on his computer that the Roma Pass is not currently available. This appears to still be the case, so under the circumstances the "day ticket" for transportation is the option I'd choose. Which Hotel are you staying in? Happy travels!

Kathe, if you're staying near the Roma Termini Station you would be better served riding the buses and metro, rather than walking. Especially as you return to your hotel because the train station is uphill from almost every site! The buses are very easy to use - you might read this for more assistance: Riding buses in Rome. The metro would be great for getting to the Vatican from the Roma Termini area or back from the Colosseo. This article has some insights into using the metro: The Metro in Rome. Once downtown, it's quite easy to walk to most sites. I'd certainly explore the public transportation options for the ride back to your accommodations.
