Budget Airlines - Venice to Budapest?

Hello - We are trying to figure out if we'll take a night train Venice to Budapest or if we'll fly. It's really about cost since so far, it's significantly different.

I'm waiting to here back from BETS on the night train cost (there is some issues with Trenitalia's website apparently) but I have a good (very inflated) idea of the total cost of 2 deluxe doubles (if they even do exist) on the night train plus the cost of the tickets crossing Slovenia, Croatia and into Budapest (we have a Eurail pass that covers Italy).

Right now, the cost of the night train versus the cost of hotel in Venice, transportation to/from airport and the flights...is at least half the cost (for 4 people). The flights, transportation and hotel is about $1400 and the night train comes no where near that. I have heard the stories (and googled more) about that particular night train and not getting a good night sleep but the cost is so significantly lower it's hard to argue it.

The only airline that I can find that flies on May 20 from Venice to Budapest direct is Malev Hungarian. The flight has sat around $200 for months now. I have looked at other budget airlines - Wizz Air (of course flies May 19 and May 21...), SkyEurope and used skyscanner to find others and I cannot. Anyone know of any other airlines that fly this route? Thanks!

Use this website: http://www.bravofly.co.uk/vg1/flights.doUsing that site, I'm finding flights on Bravo Fly, including one for €9.99 from Treviso (Treviso is ~20 miles north of Venice) to Budapest on May 21 (if you can adjust your itinerary by one day), but also many flights on May 20 from Venice to BUD.

Thanks!

Sharon - Yes, I used whichbudget initially and only found Wizz Air as an option.

Kent - Thanks for that link - that is one I haven't seen. Unfortunately our schedule is pretty set and if we fly, we're flying May 20. I see there is a fare of about $200 USD - same as what I've found with Malev unfortunately.

Yes, it's not a major air route, so competition does not force airfares down the way it does with more popular air routes. There are only so many choices, given what you want to do, you've done your homework and I'm sure you'll make the best choice for your group, out of the available choices you have.
