It has now been confirmed that the Brussels to Berlin European Sleeper Train (see https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/transportation/new-sleeper-train-debuts-brussels-amsterdam-berlin-extending-to-prague-in-2024 )
is to be extended to Dresden and Prague from March 2024, and at the same prices as were being charged to Berlin, as low as 19 Euro in seated accommodation.
With the advent of inexpensive European budget airlines, I'm not a big fan of trains--especially the few overnight trains that are left.
But looking at the Brussels Airport, they don't have nearly the number of budget airlines servicing it as other large European airports..
I personally would take the train from Brussels directly to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and catch a budget airline to Prague from there.
The advent of budget airlines (which btw. are often heavily subsidised) did indeed result in a lot of night trains disappearing. I used to be able to travel all the way from Belgium to Croatia by night train...
So now everybody is encouraged to keep contributing to the demise of our planet as much as possible...
They are subsidized in the fact that there is no tax on fuel on international flights. But that I believe is true of all airlines, not just discount airlines. But not my specialty so .....
If you really care about the planet, first and foremost, Holdiay Seekers should stay home. The fact that maybe 1% of the world population is contributing 2.5% of greenhouse gas (airline pollution) is pretty nutz.
The typical American Bourgeoisie's trip from Los Angles to Prague dumps 1.5 to 3.0 tons, depending on the fare class, of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The trip of a local working Proletariat from Brussels to Prague on a discount airline dumps 0.2 tons of carbon dioxide. So the problem is Americans need to care enough about the future of the world to stay home.
On the other hand a Greenpeace article I read said that there are an awful lot of routes in Europe that are cheaper by plane than by train, some several times cheaper. So doing away with the least expensive option limits the Proletariat's access to the world and only increases class subjugation.
The inaugural train to Prague is now confirmed as running on Monday 25 March 2024.
The service runs 3 days a week in each direction.
