Brussels Airport Question + General Customs Question

I'm currently looking at this flight:

Bilbao, Spain to Brussels, then from Brussels to Chicago, IL, where I will again connect to my final destination of Seattle.

The flight from Spain is via Brussels Airlines, and the other two on United, all on the same ticket. I'd have a 2 hr 20 min layover in Brussels. Is this adequate time to make the transfer? Will I have to go through any security/border control or customs screenings, or would I do these in Spain or the United States?

You will go though passport control when you exit the Schegnen area i.e. at Brussels and on entry to the US.

Security will happen at Bilbao and I would expect it at Brussels as well (though not 100% sure).

2hr 20min is fine for a layover in Brussels. No need to collect luggage as it will be checked through to Chicago.

As long as you stay airside in BRU, it should be fine as long as your inbound flight into BRU is on time. You're on one ticket so United will put you on the next flight (could be the next day) if a seat is available.

If your flight is delayed for reasons not the fault of Brussels Airlines (weather for example), check the EU regulations about whether United will give you compensation for hotel & food as you wait for a seat on the next available flight.

Hi Justin. That should be fine. We did a similar itinerary using Brussels Air / United, but starting in Paris. Our scheduled connecting time in Brussels was 90 minutes and it was plenty of time. Enjoy your trip!
