Britrail, upgrades?

Is it at all possible to upgrade using a standard class purchased Britrail Flexipass to 1st class for one destination?

We are planning to purchase a (8 day) standard class Britrail Flexipass for our trips throughout Great Britain and most trains do not offer 1st class which is why it makes sense to invest in just the standard class... but traveling 1st class from London to Edinburgh in 1st class is sounding awful tempting right now (especially with luggage).

But for the rest of our travel throughout the country(ies), the routes are (mostly) standard class only.

Just wondering if there's an easy way to go about?

Buy the 8 day pass and then a separate first class ticket?

In the Railpass section, Rick writes: "Those with first-class passes may travel in second-class compartments (although the conductor may give you a puzzled look). Those with second-class passes can pay the 50% difference in ticket price to upgrade to first (not possible in Britain)."

I believe your assumption is correct. Buy the separate First Class ticket.
