British Airways Question and Connections

Hello:

We're taking a BA flight in a few weeks for our honeymoon from Vegas. We have a layover in Gatwick on the ride over (destination is Venice) and then coming back we leave from Rome, to Heathrow and then back to Vegas.

1) Connections: We have 2 hours and 50 minutes at Gatwick which I think we should be ok with (since I believe it's a smaller airport) but on our return flight from Rome we only have 1 hour and 50 minutes to make our flight to Las Vegas and this is at Heathrow! It appears that we need to take a shuttle to another terminal and go through security at Heathrow...I have no idea how that is enough time prior to take off back to Vegas. And this is assuming we are not delayed leaving Rome. We booked through Costco Travel so in the event we do miss our flight, would we have to go through Costco to get the next flight out or will BA do this for us directly?
And assuming the next flight out is not until the next day, will BA cover any hotel/food costs for missed connection (assuming it's not our fault)? We did purchase Travel Guard insurance as well.

2) Anyone have any input on BA flights from the Western US to Gatwick and return flight from Heathrow? I have read some mostly negative things about BA in general which is making me worried (we have regular economy seats).

Thanks!

Thank you so much!

You can find negative reviews of every airline. Disappointed people are much more likely to post reviews that satisfied ones. We choose to fly British Airways every time to Europe. These days we fly with miles and go Business Class, but until recently we flew in Economy and it was fine.

One hour 50 minutes meets the minimum connect time for transfer between terminals. They have an airside bus that will take you between terminals, no problem. You will have to go through security at the new terminal, but it should not take long. The one time we did a terminal transfer at Heathrow, from T5 to T 3, it was 45 minutes gate to gate. If you are on one ticket, you are protected should your incoming flight be too late to make the connection.

If you go to the Heathrow airport website, I believe it is www.heathrow.com, you can find a section that explains exactly what to do to change terminals while making a connection. (Hint, do not go through immigration and customs. Stay airside. There will be a transfer desk. )

As you deplane at Heathrow from your flight from Rome, there will be BA agents in uniform available to help expedite your passage on to your Las Vegas-bound flight. Also, Heathrow Airport employs people in purple blazers to help passengers and (mostly correctly) answer questions. Don't be afraid to ask any of those folks!

We had a tight connection last summer (Nice to Heathrow to Denver), and while we made our flights, our luggage didn't make it on our Denver-bound plane. It was delivered to our home, free, the next day when it made the following flight. Don't dawdle, but don't worry. Happy wedding and happy travels!

I agree with another poster who enjoys BA. Personally I have not had problems with them and will be taking my trip to Europe with them this year. Heathrow is also a pretty organized airport. While not a lot of time, almost 2 hours seems pretty doable.

We booked through Costco Travel so in the event we do miss our flight,
would we have to go through Costco to get the next flight out or will
BA do this for us directly?

Costco is an agent and not a airline company so once you are in the hands of BA, BA will take care of you just as well as if you had bought the ticket directly from them.

And assuming the next flight out is not until the next day, will BA
cover any hotel/food costs for missed connection (assuming it's not
our fault)? We did purchase Travel Guard insurance as well.

It will depend on the reasons for missing the flight. There is always the possibility that they would re-route you on later flight. Depending on the terms of Travel Guard (you did read the fine print?), TG probably will reimburse you for out-of-pocket expenses that are specifically covered in the policy. Be sure you understand the terms of the policy and the documentation need to support any claim.

Presuming that Costco have booked you on a single ticket there is nothing to be concerned about; should you misconnect due to the first flight being late you will either be put onto a different flight on BA or AA or your overnight accommodation will be taken care of. The latter would probably be more likely as the LAS flight is the latest to anywhere on the Western side of the USA as far as I can see.

With the opening of Terminal 5 it took a bit of time but transfers have greatly improved in my experience over the last couple of years. I flew BA last year with transfer in Heathrow both ways which was a very smooth experience - flights and transfers. And will do so again in a few weeks time, this time with an even tighter connection of 1 hr 40 minutes. I am a bit worried but it's on one ticket and BA would put me on the next flight should I miss the connection.
