British Airline or American Airline to Heathrow Airport?

Hi, We will be using our AA frequent miles to book our flight to London. We have option of BA (direct flight available approx. 9 hrs) and AA (non direct with 1 stops 20 hrs, 2 stops 17 hrs). But we need to pay $220 tax one way flight for BA and only $5 tax for AA. (We will be returning to Seattle from Paris and planning to fly AA $90 tax instead of BA $350 tax since both airlines don't offer direct return flights from Paris). We have never flew to Europe using BA and wondering is which airline do people recommend? How is the seating like in BA (aircraft 744)? I tried to find 744's seating chart online, but can't seem to find any. And does it worth to pay $220 tax to flight BA over AA? Thanks, Jenny

If it were up to me,would pay the $250 so would not have an eighteen hour trip, especially if you are using the frequent miles to get your ticket.

Jenny - I would also opt for the BA flight. I use their service to London alot and really like them. The fact that it is a direct flight is a big plus. Also to check out the BA 747 configuration go to seatguru.com

You don't say which class of service; I guess economy (Y). There probably isn't a tremendous difference in Y; the 777 services of AA now have seat back entertainment and all BA do. The Y seat layout on the BA 747 is 3-4-3 on the lower deck. Unless recently changed alcohol is charged for on AA but is free on BA. Trumping all of this for me would be the time as already mentioned.

Hi, Jenny. I have used both BA and AA from Seattle to Europe, but not recently. I checked BAs website and I believe their aircraft from here is a 747. BA has done some upgrading of their 747 fleet, but they don't fly those out of Seattle (at least according to their website). I ran into that this summer with another airline (Delta). I doubt that the service or seating would be much different between BA and AA so you have to decide if paying the $ is worth saving your time.

Thanks everyone. My friend had used BA before and she hated BA's seat because its layout is 3-4-3 and said the seat was small and not very comfortable (and she is not big at all). I like AA's 777 seating layout a little better because it has two seats for window seat as we are two people and also we can choose our seats prior and we can't choose seats with BA. However, the longer flight is putting me off...... With the one stop AA flight, there will be a 7 hrs layover at DFW (approx. 20 hrs). Arriving London around Noon. The other 2 stops AA flights arrives London around 8am in the morning (approx. 17 hrs)

A long layover somewhere and a 17-hour or 2-hour flight is going to cost you a lot more jet lage and fatigue than the direct 9-hour flight. I would be much more concerned about that than the seats. We take that BA flight from Seattle and have never found the seats too small. We fly as a family of 4 so we take the middle seats all in a row. You fly at night so don't need a window anyway!

I know if it were me, I'd take the direct BA flight. I can't imagine choosing either a 2-stop flight or a 17+ hour flight when there was a non-stop 9 hour flight available. I think waiting in an airport is almost as bad as sitting in a plane.

From seat guru the BA 747 seat is half an inch narrower than the AA 777 seat - but is slightly wider than the AA 767 seat. Needs status to reserve seats ahead of check-in on BA but you can choose to pay for this.
