Britain - France itinerary

Hi. My mom and I sadly rescheduled our trip for May 2009 after learning two months ago that my dad has inoperable brain cancer.

We've decided to postpone for one year. Our original itinerary was convoluted. I hope someone else has a better idea.

Our original itinerary was London, Bath, Nantes (via two air france flights Bristol-Paris and Paris-Nantes), then a train back to Paris (where we would depart).

I would love some suggestions of itineraries that would still incorporate London, Paris, some English countryside (I like the idea of Bath) and Nantes (a town where we may have ancestors).

Thank you!

Is your original plan to fly open jaws into London and out of Paris? I would do this trip just as you have originally planned it. I suggest staying in London first, taking a train to Bath, then bus or train to Bristol for your flight to Paris. For English countryside, you can take a train or bus any direction from London for a daytrip or to stay overnight. I enjoyed using a London Plus Pass (it covers train travel in southern England within 1-1/2 hours of travel) last fall; I daytripped to Moreton-in-Marsh (Cotswalds), Cambridge, Portsmouth, Bournemouth, Hampstead Court and Windsor Castle. If you stay in Bath, it is possible to travel around that area by bus (coach) to smaller towns. Check the Rick Steves book on England for ideas. There are tours out of Bath into the Cotswalds, to Stonehenge, and to Wells-Glastonbury.
