Brig to MXP

I am in the early stages of planning next year's trip to Switzerland with my son's family, including twin boys who will be 6. Our last village will be near Brig, and they will need to head to the airport from there ( my husband and I will head to Chamonix to hike the Tour du Mont Blanc). The question is which airport.

I believe Geneva and Milan are closest, but we will also check Zurich. We will be trying to balanccod light cost, travel time fromBrig, and convenience. We know exactly how to get to the Geneva and Zurich airports by train, but not the best way for Milan. I am thinking Milan may be cheapest in terms of flight prices, but not the most convenient.

Would the best to MXP be train to Stresa and car service from there? ( Would the 6-year-olds need to be in booster seats in Italy?) Or stay on the train to Milano Centrale and take the train or bus to MXP from there?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Lola

Do a search here for "car seats in Italy"--- I am sure you will find lots of discussion..... I am not sure what the answer is. If they are required, I would think a car service would be able to provide them ( probably for a fee)

As for which airport to use, its a matter of when they will be flying and when you look as to which airline at which airport is going to have the best cost. Another factor is how many stops etc will they make on the way home from each airport.

Its probably just a tedious "trial and error" of trying all the various combinations of pricing from Brig to G, Z or M. And then from each of those airports to their ultimate destination.

You can probably plugin some dates now to get a general idea of what flights look like , time and cost wise, to see if one location has a distinct advantage over the others

Thanks, Joe. I did a quick check on flight prices for the comparable time this summer (late July---early August) and Milan was the winner. But that can always change over the next year. Swiss Air sometimes offers great prices for flights to Zurich. Not Geneva as far as I have seen.

As to the price of transport from our village near Brig (probably Riederalp), the cost between the three airport options is not a concern, as we will likely have Swiss passes. It is the convenience factor that is most important innthisnpart of the equation.

There are many options to get from Brig to MXP.
1. Train to Stresa, then Alibus to Malpensa.
2. Train to Arona, then Alibus to Malpensa.
3. Train to Gallarate, then SACO bus to Malpensa, or taxi, its only about 3 miles.
4. Train to Milano Centrale, then train to Malpensa.

Airlines let you buy tickets only 330 days in advance, so it looks like it will be Sept., before you will know who has what from where at what price.

Until then enjoy summer and work around the flights and plan the rest as best you can.

If your crystal ball can tell you that next summer the airline pricing will be like this year, ask it for the winning lotto number.

I think its like the fine print from a stock broker "past performance is not a guarantee of future results"

good luck

Actually my husband and I will be getting our flight tickets 355 days ahead, using miles, so the dates for the trip will be set then. But the kids will get theirs later.

Materials I ordered from the Berner Oberland TI arrived yesterday and reminded me that we will have a chance to be in Mürren for their Dorffest if we reverse the order of travel and put Mürren last. So now it is most likely that Zurich will be the best airport for the kids' flight out, and I don't need to fret over Milan complications.
