Booking train travel in advance

I'm taking a trip to Germany and Austria next month and am wondering if there is any benefit to booking your train tickets early? We are pretty set on the times we will want to travel. However, if the ticket price doesn't change as the day approaches then keeping the flexibility of buying at the time of travel might be nice.

Thanks!

But Sparpreis and Sparschiene ticket prices do disappear until on day of departure, they don't exist and only full fare tickets are for sale. But it depends on how long a train trip you are planning. Short local trips can be done cheaply anytime after 9 am weekdays with Laender tickets within a given German Land, basically equivalent to a U.S. state.

I'm traveling between Munich to Hallstatt, Austria then from Hallstatt to Salzburg, then from Salzburg back to Munich - so all relatively short trips.

Much of your travel is in Austria and not subject to advance purchase tickets from the Bahn.

You could get a Bahn Savings Fare ticket via the RailJet (RJ) from Munich to Hallstatt, but Hallstatt back to Salzburg would not be a ticket of the Banh. As for Salzburg to Munich, you best bet is a Bayern-Ticket and regional trains.
