Booking for Austria + Switzerland

I've just read the "Should we book through Rail Europe" thread. My wife & I are going from Zurich to Innsbruck to Wein to Graz to Hallstat to Zurich in late July. We may add a local day trip out of Graz.

My wife apparently qualifies for the VORTEIL Scard (age 60+) but I don't (not yet 65). We are considering an Austria-Switzerland 1st Class Saver Pass.

Several trains on the OBB website strongly recommend reservations.

If we didn't already have the airline tickets, staying in Austria would apparently be cheaper.

Suggestions?
Thanks, Fred

Hi, Fred. I think the VORTEILSCARD is for residents only. From the oebb Website:

"Eligibility conditions and acquisition

Women starting from 60 and men starting from 65 years, who can prove that their main residence is in Lower Austria,"

http://www.oebb.at/pv/en/Servicebox/VORTEILScard/VORTEILScard_Senior/VORTEILScard_Senior_NOe.jsp

I could be wrong haven't purchased them personally, but that's what I found researching them for my parents.

I've done the routes you've mentioned, and dint' take first class, but had absolutely no problem buying day of tickets. Those are pretty much 'commuter' routes and run frequently.

PS - The second half of the train ride from Wien to Graz is beautiful! Make sure you stay awake for that! Hope that helps. Chris
