Booking British trains in advance

Is it a good idea to purchase my British train tickets before I get over there? These aren't high-demand routes, and there are plenty of trains, from what I researched on the National Rail Enquiries Web site. I wanted to book online just to make sure, but the sites for the actual ticket purchase ask for a British postal code, even for tickets printed from a machine at the station. Any ideas?

We mostly use BritRail passes. But even when we buy tickets direct, we just purchase the day we travel. We've never had a problem gettig seats, even in "high season". Why not just stay flexible! We have been to the UK more than 40 times in 20 years and love to travel by train.

We pre-purchased our tickets from Edinburgh to London (GNER), but had to do it via phone call, as their website does not recognize US addresses as previously noted. It only took a couple of minutes and the tickets will be waiting for us at Waverly Station.
