booking an intercity milan to monterosso train

Do I have to book this from Australia before I go or can I book a few days ahead at Bellagio? If so where or do I need to go to vernazza to do it. AND can we buy italaina train tickets days ahead and just put it in the ticket thingy on the day of travel? I bought ahead in Paris and lost it all as only good for 24 hours.

Frances, To answer your first question, NO you don't have to book the tickets from Australia. It's so easy to buy tickets in Italy. The second part of your question was a bit confusing. If you're staying in Bellagio, you won't be able to buy tickets for Monterosso in Vernazza. If you could provide more details on your trip, it would be easier to offer more specific suggestions.

Frances: One thing I can clarify: there is a full-service Trenitalia station in Monterosso where you can buy any Trenitalia tickets you need. In Vernazza, they only sell the local tickets/passes. If you haven't already seen this on the helpline, check out Ron in Rome's excellent guides to trains in Italy. Here's one link. There are other great articles in his Transportation sedion. http://www.roninrome.com/%20transportation/1st-class-versus-2nd-class The CT is wonderful. When will you be there?

Sorry guys I meant Varenna not Vernazza. I am going to Bellagio from Malpensa THEN bybus/ train from Lecco to Monterosso changing at Milan. It is the intercity from Milan to Monterosso which needs a reservation that I am concerned about. I hope I can buy it in Bellagio but there is no station. I may have to go across to Varenna as Ken suggested or book before i leave Australia. I am worried about it being booked out. We are booked in Monterosso in early may for 4 days. Have wanted to do this for years. I see that lots of folk think Monterosso is too touristy but I guess we can go to the other places on the train anyway. Has anyone been to Portovenere?
