My boyfriend and I found www.trenitalia.com was cheaper to get our one way train from Rome-Venice. We haven't been able to get the site to accept payment. We signed up for Verfity by Visa, but our credit cards are still rejected. Other sites charge upwards of $60 more for the same train route. Any suggestions?
The Trenitalia site currently doesn't accept North American credit cards. Just buy your tickets when you first arrive in Rome. The ticket machines at the station will accept your card and they have an English option. Amica fares (20% discount) are sold for Rome-Venice fast trains. If any of the allotted seats are still available, you can get an Amica fare up to midnight of the day before departure.
Follow Tim's advice. There is absolutely no need to buy tickets in advance for Italian trains. Lots of services and lots of capacity. The 20% Amica fares are nice but the base is cheaper enough that the full should not be a deal breaker. Avoid use Eurorail as ticket source because it a travel agency which charges lots of fees.
Sarah, I agree with the previous 2 posters. As you probably saw on the trenitalia site, there are plenty of trains on this route so you don't need to worry about missing the one train that day going to your destination.
As suggested in Rick Steves' Rome book, I went to the American Express office soon after our arrival in Rome to book our Rome to Venice train tickets. The price seemed pretty close to what I had seen on the Trenitalia website.
