I would say if you haven't started looking yet, definitely start. I just bought a RT ticket to London for the first week of Dec. and got an amazing deal. I noticed that most airlines are having their fall fare sales right now, so definitely keep an eye out for holiday sales and book soon-ish. It always gets more expensive around holidays.

Definitely RIGHT AWAY.
Christmas bookings are always very popular and your choice is likely to be limited already. When we've done Christmas or New Year's in Europe, we've always booked back in April or May at the very latest.
