I see lots of advice about CDW insurance when renting a car in Europe. Using a credit card with coverage to cover the value of the car. But what about any injury's that you cause to yourself or others. Does anyone purchase Bodily Injury Insurance? Can you buy just Bodily Injury Insurance
The legally required third-party liability insurance for damage to property and people outside the vehicle is automatically included in each rental and covers a high value. Injury to yourself would have to be covered by your own medical insurance or travel insurance. Emergency medical treatment in Europe also tends to be subsidized and much cheaper than in the USA.
Is this legally required insurance included even if you don't get the CDW from the rental company??
Yes, at least it has been in every car we've ever rented.
corey,
According to the car rental guide from www.gemut.com, third party liability insurance is required......
"All European rental companies are required by law to protect themselves and their rental customers with millions of euros in third-party liability insurance. In other words, the rental company covers you for damage to property and persons outside your vehicle. What you are responsible for is damage to, or theft of, the car you rented. For that you need Collision (CDW) and theft insurance."
You may want to contact Gemut on their toll-free number or download their PDF car rental guide.

Note that some countries in Europe require a compulsory International Driver's Permit. Where are you planning on driving? Also, some countries require a highway tax vignette (hefty fines without it).
Thanks everyone for the information.
