We are going with a group to Greece in October. Our last stop is Monemvasia and the rest of the group will being driving back to Athens. My husband and I would like to extend our trip to stay a couple of nights on Hydra. What options do we have for taking a boat from or near Monemvasia to Hydra?
Go to www.seat61.com, then click on Greece, down the left side of the home page. There will be all the Greek ferry operators there. You can click on each of them and see if you can arrange a ferry. I think you can also go to www.tripadvisor.com, type in Hydra forum or maybe Athens forum and ask your questions there. Tripadvisor.com is the gold standard for getting great help from experienced travelers from around the world.
Joan, I suspect it's going to be difficult to find a boat from Monemvasia (Gefyra) to Hydra in October. The Ferries that stop there are likely just a "summer only" route. I don't know if there are any Bus trips from Monemvasia to Ermioni, but that would be your best bet to get to Hydra. The trip on the Hydrofoil to Hydra is very quick (less than an hour as I recall). One tip about Hydra - DON'T drink the tap water, it's dreadful! The water in Monemvasia isn't much better - I also used bottled water there. Pick up some bottled water in one of the small shops in the harbour area as soon as you land. Given the time of year you'll be there, you might want to contact Fantasy Travel or one of the other Greek Travel Agencies, as they'd be able to set up the easiest transportation connections. Check Matt Barrett's site, www.greecetravel.com for listings of other Travel Agencies. Happy travels!
