Blow up 1st class sleeper

Has anyone used this blow up seat cushion? It folds up pretty tight and doesn't weigh in too heavy. You blow it up, set it in your seat and it gives you a air cushion with lumbar support to "lay" on, well, sort of. I'm stuck in economy on a British Airways long night flight and although it might look silly, when your as uncomfortable as you've ever been and all you want to do is get some sleep the whole cabin can laugh at me if they want. Heck, it the thing helps me get some sleep I won't even hear them laughing. Anyone use one of these, or see people using them?

I haven't seen it in use, but it appears that it takes up a good portion of your seat, making you actually sit up straighter than your seat would recline if it wasn't there. I don't know...I think I'd prefer to recline more (and save the $45 and having to lug it around all over).

Donna, who's gonna blow it up for you? Not me!! LOL!!

I can't believe that some Pax actually ask Crew to blow up stuff like that for them! How unsanitary is that? Then they are disappointed and somewhat annoyed when we decline!

F/A: I can't believe someone would dare ask a flight attendant to do such a thing!! That's amazing!

As I said before, it looks like it would make you sit up straighter, so I'm not sure how it could be more comfortable. And it appears to be just a back cushion, so it doesn't do anything about the seat itself (so it wouldn't alleviate any butt discomfort). I have an inflatable neck pillow, too, but rarely use it. If you are in a window seat you will at least have a wall to lean against, but other than that there's not much to do about it. I've made several trips to Europe in recent years and I have always gotten at least some sleep if I wanted to. I just don't think that this cushion would be worth what you are paying for it. And I have some questions about anything that requires an instructional video to be able to learn to use it. It just sounds like more trouble than its worth.

Hey guys, who said anything about asking someone else to blow it up? I certainly wouldn't ask the flight attendant to do that! Are you kidding? Making fun? It is designed to take the fewest amounts of breaths to "inflate" and I would do that myself, thank you. I carry one of those blow up neck cushions and I use it often when I travel and need to catch some sleep. I really am serious about any ideas anyone has found that help get them through the long hours of discomfort on a flight like this. It's going to be a long flight, my butt will be killing me and all I will want to do is find a tiny bit of comfort to catch some sleep.

Donna, So sorry! No offense was intended towards you. I agree, those long flights are miserable for me, also. I have no experience with the cushion you are describing, nor have I seen one, so I can't give any advice about that.

Nope, not kidding! I've heard all the "feel sorry for me" reasons why I should blow up their inflatables!! Ain't gonna happen!!

(I didn't really mean Donna was going to expect this I was just being dramatic to make a point)

Something you might try is one of those inflatable invalid rings. Some people actually do use those when they fly to reduce pressure on their spine(?). I'm not sure how scientificly proven it is but I've known Pax to carry them for that reason or so they said.

Ah flightattendent,, do you mean the hemmroid rings that they give new mommies to sit on in the hospital,, oh, they do provide some comfort....

My own mother got to the point she could not fly because airlines have over the years designed the seats to be less and less comfortable,, and don't give me the weight/ space reasoning, it isn't just the spacing, it is definately the convex seat back,, it is a back breaker, I notice the flight attendents seats are not convex??? I would rather have a straight up and down seat back then the horrilbe bent in ones.. I use an airline pillow in the small of my back, and bring my own inflateable for my neck.

Ah Patt!! Now Donna won't wanna try it b/c you've called it that!! LOL!! Yeah, those are the ones! ;-)
Our Jumpseats are just like sitting on a block of wood. But I guess that is the upside b/c if we get too comfortable we just might fall asleep! (And believe me...that wouldn't be hard to do!!)

LOL your're right FA ,

I'll call it an "invalid ring", that does sound better!

I've used them for several long haul flights. You don't sit on it--it cradles your body and supports your back. It really only takes a few breaths to inflate adequately, since you are only inflating the outer portion of the device. In effect, it's as though you were on a slanted "bed" with your feet under the seat ahead. On the positive side, it really supports your back and it keeps your head and upper torso from flopping to one side. On the minus side, it does take up space in the seat and is awkward to get around if someone beside you needs to get up to use the bathroom. I really can't sleep on planes well, and I found the First Class Sleeper a lot more effective than a neck pillow. Having said that, I have switched to a large inflatable wedge shaped pillow that sits on the tray table. You lean slightly forward, hug the pillow, and dream on...

Thanks JER. I'm not feeling so stupid about considering the 1st Class Sleeper now that someone has been brave enough to come forward and admit they've tried the thing. I also saw the wedge shaped thing that you sit on the tray table and lean forward and lay your head on. I know it is always difficult to actually sleep for very long on one of these flights, but little opportunities to be comfortable and get some sleep is good. I got this thing on sale and really didn't pay much for it, so I guess I'll try it and see for myself if it works.
