Blackberry Cars

Well, I had a shock yesterday--as in sticker shock. In 2019, I hired the firm Blackberry Cars to drive me from Victoria Station to Heathrow. It cost me 30 pounds sterling. This year's quote? 90 pounds.
I have two questions: 1) is the war in the Ukraine the reason why this price is 3x what it was not so long ago? i.e. cannot access fuel
2) Does anyone have a suggestion as to an easy and not too expensive way to get to Heathrow from Victoria? I know I can take the Tube from Paddington, the Elizabeth Line or the Heathrow Express.
The reason I wanted to treat myself is that I will be coming from Lewes, East Sussex, to London. The last two times I did that trip, the Southern Railway train was stuffed to the gills (once I couldn't even find a seat). So I was thinking about taking Southern to Gatwick, then the Gatwick Express to Victoria, and then a Blackberry Car. There doesn't seem to be a quick and easy way to get from Gatwick to Heathrow.
Open to suggestions! Many thanks.

Coach from Victoria coach station to Heathrow.
About 6 pounds.

Victoria coach station is across the street from the rail station.

Go to the coach station at Gatwick. Take the coach to Heathrow airport.
Price about 12 to 15 pounds.

Heathrow and Gatwick have coach transportation between them all day, frequent departures from both.

Yes there is; the coach.

Thank you, Rebecca. I keep hoping there will be a rail connection at some future date. One can dream...

Sandra, the coaches are not crowded like the rail cars. Seats are very comfy and clean, plus you have WiFi on board.

The last time we rode the coach from Heathrow to London Victoria Coach Station, there were only two other passengers besides my husband and myself.

Victoria Coach Station is across the street from Victoria (Rail) Station.

Don't pay the shocking price Blackberry Cars is asking.
I'd cancel that reservation.
It might be worth it if you had 4 people traveling together with lots of luggage, or if you were traveling with an elderly parent who had trouble walking and negotiating steps; but that's not your case, I assume.

Thankfully, I haven't made a reservation. I don't think I could bring myself to pay that much! It was a nice experience when I had it, but not 90 pounds' worth. LOL

I haven't been on a National Express bus since 1984 so it will be a new experience for me!

The “buses” running between Gatwick and Heathrow are in fact motor coaches and are very comfortable and of course your luggage is tucked away underneath. For some reason every time I have done this journey we have hit some sort of road construction, so make sure you allow plenty of time for your trip.

I agree, coach from Gatwick to Heathrow.

No, you can't blame the war on the Blackberry price. The value of the pound has dropped drastically and energy bills are climbing Oct. 1.

The UK is not affected by the war in terms of fuel.

Rebecca, are you referring to the Megabus from Heathrow to Victoria?

It's not just England/London/Blackberry Cars. My husband and I used to use a limo service to EWR which is now 3xs the price it used to be--way out of the range we are willing to pay. Now, it's Uber to the train station and train to EWR. We also don't have to worry about being stuck in traffic on the NJ Turnpike.

We were in London in June and took the tube/train to Heathrow. It was the height of tourist season but we had no problem.

I don’t think it’s limited to Blackberry. I want to take similar car service from Manhattan to JFK this Monday and the costs of the typical car services I used to use prior to the pandemic have QUADRUPLED. I can’t afford that. It’s much cheaper to take the subway to the Airtrain. Quicker too.

Fuel prices in January 2019 were £1.20 per litre for unleaded and £1.289 for diesel according to the AA. Those prices had increased by January 2022 to £1.457 and £1.49 respectively. The Ukraine war happens and prices had increased by August to £1.735 and £1.842 respectively. The pound has tanked this week, so goodness knows how much that’s going to push prices up to.

There will never be a direct rail line between Gatwick and Heathrow as it would be too costly to build and there’s not much demand for it.

Many people work from home these days, so the Southern trains should have far more capacity. I wouldn’t bother changing at Gatwick and take the service from Lewes into London then take the tube or Heathrow Express or the Elizabeth line to Heathrow.

Denise, no.

The coach we take back and forth to Heathrow is by National Express.
More information here on their website:

It is not necessary to buy tickets ahead of time. Just walk up to the window at the airport coach station and buy your tickets. Be specific about wanting to go to Victoria Coach Station, London, because the coaches go to destinations all around London.

After buying your ticket, you will go through some sliding glass doors and wait outside. Have a seat on the benches. Your coach will pull into the stalls. It will have Victoria Coach Station on the header above the front windshield.
The driver will put any large bags you have under the bus in a locked compartment.

When you arrive in London at Victoria Coach Station be careful as you exit, because it's a busy station with lots of coaches pulling in. You will exit the station onto Buckingham Palace Road. Be careful of traffic. You can hail a cab here if you are going on to a hotel quite some distance away.

You could also enter Victoria Station and get on the tube there for travel to other parts of London.

There are numerous hotels in this area. You can walk several blocks to Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and the Churchill War Rooms. You can walk to the riverfront near Big Ben/Parliament buildings and catch a river boat to the City of London, Tower of London or onward to Greenwich.

From London to Heathrow on the coach--Here's a link that may be helpful.

This coach station is a bit more crowded than the ones at the airports.

You would enter and find the ticket desk, buy your ticket, then take a seat at the back of the building in a room with large picture windows overlooking the stalls. Coaches will pull into the stalls. You would be looking for the one with Heathrow Airport on the header. From this station you can also go to Gatwick Airport as well as to other destinations; Canterbury, Cambridge and more.

Thank you all very much for your help and suggestions. I'm thinking I will take the Elizabeth Line from Heathrow to Paddington, and then the Tube to the neighborhood where I am staying. I haven't been on the new route before and am looking forward to it.

I'm glad to hear the train cars won't be as crowded. I'll be going to Lewes on a Friday, and that was particularly crowded.
