Just wondering if anyone has done any biking around Amsterdam and Brugge. Planning on exploring the area September 2013 by cycling and B & B stays so looking for advice, tips and helpful websites.....cheers
This is a lot of distance to cover. There are two "major" routes to cover this route. One via the coast/dunes until Rotterdam, then along the coast (beautiful, but very windy) all the way to Midelburg and then crossing the ferry over the Westerscheldt estuary and moving one. The second is going through the "Groene Hart", de Biesboch and the cutting through Antwerpen metro and moving on. This route is more extreme as in more beautiful the first sector, uglier the 2nd one. I'm talking just about "general directions". The quality of bike paths decrease sensibly once you cross the Belgian border. And I mean noticeably, like lack of segregated bike paths along higher speed country roads etc. All the area is heavily populated, you can stick to city or town-based hotels. It is an expensive area, pays off to reserve in advance. You will need a higher performance bike. There are no "one-way" bike rentals between the countries, of course, and the trains to/from one country to another don't carry bicycles. So you'll need to buy a bicycle with intent of re-selling it upon arrival in Brugge. For Dutch bike paths, there is a super website with ultra detailed maps of the whole country (http://www.fietsersbond.nl).
