Anyone know how much to rent bikes in Bruge and how difficult to do self-guided tours to Damme and/or Sluis Holland? Time needed, cautions, etc. Thanks so much. Our trip is April-May 2010.
If you're staying in town, several of the hotels have bikes available, free of charge. Hotel Adornes is one.
I rented a bike and rode to Damme last September. I did a 24-hour rental from Koffieboontje Bike Rental near the main square (RS special price was honored). I would allow about an hour each way for a ride from main square to Damme, including time to stop and savor the views along the way. Allow about another hour in Damme, longer if you plan to include lunch. You'll need to ride through Bruges to reach the canal, but once there the bike trail is excellent and fairly flat. I rode along one side of the canal on the way to Damme, then took Rick's "secret" path and rode along the opposite side on the way back. Note that many city streets in Bruges are cobble stone, which can become uncomfortable if you do quite a bit of in-town bike riding. All in all, I really enjoyed the bike trip to Damme.
