We are doing a Bike and Barge across the netherlands. Is is customary to tip the crew after the tour is over? If so do you tip a percent of the cost of th tour ?
Not knowing the cost or duration of the trip, here's a rough idea (assuming the crew is not more than three folks - - captain, deck hand, cook): The day you leave, there'll be a tip jar/box/jug prominently displayed. Toss in five percent, but not more than fifty euros. Another approach is ten euro per person per day, but, again, not more than fifty euro for a party of two. The one tip is split up among the crew.
Last guided bike trip we took, the last night at dinner everyone in the group got together and decided on the tip. There were 3 guides. Some of the group was better to do than the others, and they decided to offer up $100 per person or $200 for each couple for the 3 guides to divide up. A hat was passed around with the understanding that if you couldn't give that much, it was OK. We presented the tip to the head guide and let her decide how to divide it up. It is customary to tip people that help you on guided tours. Like on a cruise, you are expected to tip everyone that works for the company you use. You can decide on the amount.
