Best way to travel from Madrid Spain to Gibraltar, then get into Gibraltor

What train do we take and how far will it take us, do we need to switch to a bus somewhere and far will it go, then where do we get the taxi to take us over the border? Do taxi's go over the border and to your hotel?

If you take the bus to La Linea, the bus station is about 3 minutes from the border. You walk across the border, then walk across the only runway of the Gibraltar airport and catch a bus or taxi on the other side. I don't think that taxis actually cross the border.

I got a kick out of having to cross the active runway to get into Spain. Definitely one of my more interesting border crossings.

Janet,
When I visited "The Gib" I was staying in Fuengirola a delightful city on the Costa del Sol. I took a day tour. We were picked up at the hotel in a lovely coach.Once in Gibraltar we were transferred to vans to explore at sea level and then to ascend up the Rock. The highlight of my visit was the vista from the heights of Morroco, the visit to St. Michael's cave, and our guide taught us how to feed raw pasta, not spaghetti, to the apes. Remeber to bring your passport. I have Brit friends who drove almost an hour to Gib and couldn't get in because they didn't bring their passports. Cheers.

Take the train from Madrid to Algeciras (about 4.5 hours, one train in the morning, one in the afternoon), then the bus to La Linea, and walk across the border. Buses are available as soon as you cross, so you won't have to worry about walking across the airport runway....not sure if cabs make it that far.
Book the train tickets up to 62 days in advance at www.renfe.es and you can get up to 60% off,.....one way second class tickets as low as about 28 Euro. The site is in Spanish, but navigable with some help. The tickets are print-at-home.

"The highlight of my visit was the vista from the heights of Morroco..."

That was my husband's favorite part of our stop in Gibraltar, too, until one of the apes suddenly took a fancy to him (while my husband was innocently admiring the view) and demonstrated his love by scaling his leg and engulfing him in a bear hug. It all happened in a split second and I'm a little fuzzy on what happened next, as I was doubled over in laughter with tears coming down my face. But there was a brief skirmish...
