Best way to purchase "open-Jaw" plane tickets?

Hi- I am taking Rick Steeves southern Italy tour in Sept. 2012. My initial online research on one way airfare to Rome and one way airfare from Naples to Boston shows that this is an expensive way to go..Does anyone have recommendations on how to find cheaper "open-jaw" i.e. one way flights? Many thanks. Heather

its not 2 one ways. Use "multi City" options which should be about or a bit less than a round trip. If you do 2 one ways you may as well sell the house, and the kids...

You might see if it is less expensive to fly from Rome, if you have the time to train to FCO after the tour, doing the multicity option with both Naples and Rome.

Hi Heather, As others have stated, to choose open jaw you need to pick the option that says "multi-city" and then input the cities you depart the US, where you land, and the city to return to the US city. This should allow you to check the prices easier. Try the website www.kayak.com to compare and then try buying the tiket direct from the airline in case you have any problems while traveling. Good luck! P.S. I know a Heather from Newton. You didn't happen to grow upin upstate NY did you?

Don't price two one way tickets. Do as recommended earlier. Almost all of our trips are open jaw and I have never found open jaw to be more expensive and sometimes cheaper.

Thank you all. I will pursue the multi-city option. Heather

Heather, It sounds like you've now got the information you need for finding open-jaw flights. I just wanted to say that I'm sure you'll have an awesome time on that tour! It covers some interesting and unique parts of Italy. Happy travels!

Heather, the RS tours are great, but I hate the way they end up somewhere that taking flights back from is not economical. Its not too difficult to get open jaw flights in and out of big centers with major airlines, but places like Naples are not big centers internationally,, so I would price it out, as suggested, but i would also look at a cheap flight back to Rome, try easyjet or Vueling. See which comes out cheapest.

Heather: You cannot get from Naples back the the States without going through another European gateway city; probably Munich. Most direct Italy to U.S. flights go in and out of Roma FCO, Milan and Pisa. Rome round trip flights are running $1,100-1,150 for September. Naples open jawed flights are more like $1,230-$1250. I'm paying $705 3/27/12. You're a little early to schedule a September flight, as the best prices come from supply and demand. An option is a 2 hr. train to Rome Termini and the Leonardo Express to FCO. I wouldn't consider a flight departure prior to 10:00 am, however. See if Rick Steves' organization can come up with a fair fare for you, as they may be consolidators.

Even using David's number it is no more expensive to take the open jaw from Naples than returning to Rome when you add in the additional return transportation costs and a no brainer when you consider the time and inconvenience of returning to Rome. Ignore the $700 ticket, you will not see that in September. September and part of October tend to be on the border of high season. March in Rome is not that attractive when compared to September or Oct. And you might consider taking the train to Milan for a couple days and home from Milan.
