Best way to go from FCO airport in Rome to Civitavecchia port

This September me and my wife are schedule to arrive at FCO airport in Rome at 8:45 AM, and the same day at 5:00 PM are leaving in a Mediteranean cruise from Civitaveccia cruise terminal. The only transportation I have been able to find is via private transport at a cost of almost 200 Euros. Is there a better/cheaper way?

Better is relative. There is a train from Rome's Termini Station to Civitavecchia that would be very cheap, if I recall it takes something like 1.25 hours or so. Check this out for more information on the area: http://www.civitavecchia.com/uk/index.html Probably have to take a taxi from the train station to the ship, but that should be cheap. I would do it- but if you have a lot of luggage, it could be fairly difficult. This website advertises 90 Euro for two people to take their shuttle service from Rome to the docks, which may be a better option for you: http://www.romelimousines.com/shuttle-services/

We have done it four times and it is easy and cheap to do it. . There are two ways - cheap and really cheap. The easiest way provided you can easily handle your luggage is the Leonard Express to Termini 14E each. And then the train to Civit... 3 to 4 per hour and depending on train 45 mins to 1-15 and from 8 to 12E each. From the Civit.. station about half mile walk to the port entrance along the beach. Taxis are available but they do not want the short run and will charge a high fixed fee for the short run to the port entrance. From there a shuttle bus will take you to your ship. Buy your ticket to Civit.. at the same time you buy a ticket on the LE at the train station in the airport. At Termini you exit the LE turn left away from the front of the station and walk to platforms 24 and 25 for the Civit train. Confirm that when you buy tickets.. The cheaper way is the local train from the airport - same place as the L. Express about 6E/each and get off at the Trastevere (stop before Termini) walk to other platform and catch train to Civit. It will be a local/regional train and will take about an hour. And again buy ticket at the airport. This would be a little easier with luggage because you only changing one platform so a short walk. The walk in Termini is much longer. Go to RoninRome.com for a good description for getting to Civit....

Just updated some sections of this article, Taking the Train between Civitavecchia and Rome. Although geared towards a one-day "cruise" visit to Rome, it also can help you on a one-way trip to Civitavecchia by train. Good Luck!
