planning trip from Italy to Croatia - want to walk Cinque Terrre, then get through Pisa to Venice for a few days, then somehow hook up with a sailboat in Croatia for a week. 2 adults, 4 adult children. Leaving from Boston. Been to Croatia. having a hard time figuring out the best way to get from Cinque Terra to Pisa to Venice, and then from Venice to Croatia. Even flights are hard to find this far in advance (looking to go late june 2012). Any help would be appreciated.
There are ferries from Venice but I think they take about six to seven hours. I would fly.
It depends on where you're going in Croatia. If you're going to Istria, Venezia Lines runs catamarans that leave Venice late afternoon and arrive in Porec and Rovinj early evening, but they usually only run 3 times a week. Not the cheapest option, but cheaper and faster than flying. If you're headed further south and want to do a ferry, then your best option would be an overnight ferry from Ancona to Split and on to meet your sailboat from there. For 6 people, it might be worth looking into a car rental. Even if there's a drop-off charge, the cost could make sense compared to the alternatives. Easiest way to get from Cinque Terre to Venice via Pisa is by train. To save money, register on the Trenitalia website and then buy MINI fares for the Florence to Venice leg. You can buy inexpensive regional tickets for the other legs once you're in Italy.
