Rick's book talks about a bus from the Airport to Nice then a bus or train to Villefranche...how much time to allow for that means???or better to take a cab? at least from nice to the Airport? any tips?
thanks
I love the Rick Steves books and use them religiously, but I have to say he sometimes is a little optimistic about travel times with public transportation! I was in Nice this summer without a rental car and used Villefranche as a base for the week. It is WONDERFUL and I thank RS for that tip. You can see the airport from the beach in Nice, but it is deceptively expensive by taxi- we had no choice for a very early am flight and it was about 45 euro, with the tip. I did not use the airport bus option- but did use both the bus and the train between Nice and Villefranche (very easy, except Sundays- and watch for the Saturday schedule to change, too)a lot. They are not in the same location, so if you opt to arrive at the bus station in Nice from the airport you should plan on getting the bus to Villefranche- they run about twice an hour, and it's only about 10 minutes. So is the train- but both deposit you at the top of the town and it's a longish walk (with luggage)down to the hotels.
Bus #98 goes directly from the airport to the Nice bus station (no stops) so it will be nearly as fast as a taxi. Estimated time is 45 minutes. Bus #100 goes from Nice to Villefranche-sur-Mer. Estimated time is 10 minutes. A one-day pass (€4) is good on both buses.
