We're staying (somewhere) on the Costa Brava next week. Then going to Bern to visit friends for several days. Any suggestions on the best way to get there? I'm not sure if we should do the train or fly?
If you can get to the Figueres-Vilafant train station (not the main station in Figueres), you can get the French TGV to Geneva where you would change to a Swiss IR train to Bern. Total travel time is 8.5-9.0hrs depending on the run. The earliest run I see out of Figueres is 10:20. One note on ticket purchases from Spain into France. For us and others we know, the Spanish agent would not accept a credit card for the French portion of our trip from Barcelona to Provence. They would for the portion from Barcelona to Figueres-Vilafant but not the TGV part. We paid cash. You might be OK at Vilafant but it is a Spanish station. Alternatively if you could get to the Barcelona airport, you could fly to Zurich on www.vueling.com for as low as 60Euro. It would take you about 90 minutes to get to the airport, 1hr45min to fly and then a 90-minute train ride to Bern. With about 90 minutes needed for the domestic EU flight, that's about 6.5 hrs overall.
Thanks for this info. It helped!
