In Oct. we are staying in Monterosso, Italy (Cinque Terre) and will then be heading to Switzerland. We are thinking Zurich. What is the best way to get from Cinque Terre to Switzerland?
From Monterosso take the IC train to Milan via Genoa. There are some that do not require a change at Genoa. At Milan you take the direct IC train to Zurich. It tIes 3 hours 40 min. Look on Trenitalia for Smart fares on this train to save money.
Jessica, You can view all the rail options by using the German Rail Website. That trip will be about eight hours, with at least one change at Milano Centrale. As you're only "thinking Zurich", would you consider other locations in Switzerland? If you're interested in more of a "big city" experience with lots of shops and restaurants, then Zurich is a good choice. If you'd prefer a beautiful smaller city, I would highly recommend Lucerne. Happy travels!
The route that is recommended above will work to take you to Luzern too. Take the train from Milan toward Zurich but get off at Arth-Goldau and catch the train to Luzern.
