Best way to get from Brugges, Belgium to Florence, Italy

My husband and I are hoping to travel from Bruges to Florence in September and are trying to figure out the best, most economical way to do it with the least number of changes in trains or planes. Any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks so much!

Susan, The method I'd probably use: > Bruges to Brussels Airport by train (Time 1H:35M, 1 change) > Brussels to Milano / MXP via EasyJet (Time 1H:30M, current prices as low as €24.99) > Milano to Florence by train (Time 2H:38M with no changes if you can manage to time your arrival to connect with one of the direct trains - I believe EasyJet arrives at MXP Terminal 2, so you could also take the Malpensa Shuttle to Milano Centrale, and then take a direct train from there to Florence - time 1H:45M, no changes). Happy travels!

Take a train from Bruges to Brussels. Take a train from Brussels to Charleroi-Sud station (a fair distance south of Brussels). Take a shuttle bus from the train station to the airport. Fly Ryanair to Pisa. Booked well in advance, you can get a fare for under $40 US. Take a train directly from the airport to Florence. See this page on the Charleroi airport site.

Few connections and low price usually don't go well together. I'd essentially try any flight from Bruxelles, Charleroi or Rotterdam to Bologna, Pisa or Firenze, and then complete each end with train journeys accordingly. Even departure from Schiphol shouldn't be ruled out.

Brussels Airlines flies direct to Florence. I considered using them in 2009, but wound up spending a few days in Amsterdam and flying from there on Meridiana instead. As I recall, fares were reasonable when booked in advance (but who knows this year).
