Best way to combine N. Italy/Austria travel and flights?

Hi, this is my first post here.

I'm interested in going to Venice, Milan and the Lake Como area, and combining it with a trip to Vienna and Salzburg and possilby other points of interest in Austria tbd. I'm not sure what makes the most sense in flights from the US - whether I'd have to fly roundtrip to the same airport in Europe, or whether there's a way that I can fly to Venice and back from Vienna without it costing an extra arm and leg. I assume that these are the most logical cities to fly to? The order doesn't matter, in other words, we could do Austria first and then Italy. We'd rather use trains in Europe and not rent a car if possible. Any ideas?

Thanks much,

Irene

There are three airports that would make sense as gateways to your desired destinations: Munich, Vienna and Milan. Try to find the best round trip to either one of those or look for open jaws, i.e. US to Vienna and Milan back to US (or any other combination of the three airports since the area you intent to visit lies within a virtual triangle of the three cities).
