Best way (or place) to book a multi-leg ticket?

Hi!

I'm trying to book a multi-leg ticket for locations in the U.S. and Spain. I was using Orbitz.com last night but it kept failing at the end. I spent an hour on the phone with a customer service rep but she could not figure out the cause.

When I emailed their customer service, I received a grammatically incomprehensible response and have requested a rephrased version. But there seems to be an issue around a 6-hour minimum between flights. Every leg has at least a 24 hour gap from the leg prior, so the only think I can think of is that all your layovers between flights in a specific leg must be at least six hours and that makes no sense at all.

Has anyone else run into this and can anyone recommend a solution? I've never used a travel agent but am wondering whether I will have to. The ticket is barely affordable now, however, and my understanding is that travel agents can not be competitive with the aggregaters.

thanks!

I would try calling one of the airlines and have them assist you in booking it. I booked a multi-leg online (using Continental's website) and the flights were both Continental and Air France.

I did try that but there are only two airlines that fly out of Bismarck. United's system can't handle it because they don't partner with anyone who flies out of GRX.

I could not tell why Northwest's site couldn't handle it. It will be a couple days before I can call their customer service to find out, considering how much time I will have to have available to do so.

I wouldnt include the Madrid to Granada flight into your plans...i would book that separately thru Spanair or Ryan air...In March of this year, we booked a flight into Malaga and out of Barcelona as our "main" ticket. We flew into Malaga, caught the bus to Granada, bus to Algeciras then ferry to Morocco, bus from Algeciras to Sevilla. Outside of our "main" ticket, we then flew on Spanair from Sevilla to Barcelona for about $35 (one way, no airport hassle at all!) and then flew from Barcelona back to the US. Any reason you have to fly to Portland to leave instead of say, JFK? By the way, i plugged your iteneray into tripadvisor.com and it shows $1585 as your ticket right now....go there and play around with the dates/airports. Flights within a coutnry in Europe are so super cheap (unlike here)!

We're not flying from Madrid to Granada. That part was unclear. We're flying from Portland to Madrid and then later flying from Granada to Ontario.

I'm finding lots of affordable airfares online. The problem is when I actually go to book it, the website says something about the itinerary is unbookable after all. And never until I get through everything, including the seat selections and inputting my credit card information. But the error message never explains what aspect is unbookable.

We're getting married in Portland and then Spain is the honeymoon.

I suggest you check the fares for booking separate open jaw (multi-city) tickets:

  1. BIS-PDX and ONT-BIS

  2. PDX-MAD and GRX-ONT

After you get the various airline possibilities from Orbitz or another site, then go to each airline's site and see if you get a better fare by booking directly on the airline's site.

What may be an issue is that you have 2 stopovers in your itinerary since the stops are over 24 hours. Check the fare rules of the ticket to see if this is not allowed even though it seems to be pricing it for you. I wouldn't be surprised if the computer is treating this as a US-Europe round trip but is being throw-off by the stopovers. Most cheap fares do not allow any stopovers.
