what is the best and shortest way to go from Rome to Nice, from what i could research no overnight trains are offered anymore. do i need a pass, or just a ticket?
I just checked this site, using the name of the departing city is not enough. i guess i need to find out names of the stations, both in Rome and Nice.
It should be fine - it will just take you to a second screen asking you to narrow down your search. If you do not change anything it will go with its own defaults - in this case "ROMA" and "Nice Ville". Just hit the "Search" button again.
For any train trip in Europe, you only ever need a ticket. If you had a rail pass, you would need one that covers both Italy and France. To figure out what the best trains would be for you, use the Deutsche Bahn website. When you have searched for a trip, it will show you some options... click the arrow at the left-hand side to see all the details for that trip.
Since you are originating this journey in Rome, I offer a sample mid-day and afternoon train schedule from www.trenitlia.com. I even have the prices turned on. There is a run leaving Rome at 23:50 that has the Rome/Genoa portion as a night train. You arrive in Genoa at 6:01 (not much time for sleep) where you transfer to a train to Ventemiglia where you will change trains again for the final train to Nice Ville. You arrive in Nice Ville at 9:55.

This is great site and very reasonable price. I will have 3 days in Rome before leaving for Nice, is that enough time to purchase tickets, or do I need to buy on line?
The fare you see on the link Larry gave must be for a reclining seat on the night train plus the two regional trains. This is what I get when adding up the individual fares: Reclining seat on the night train, Rome-Genova, €24.50. Regional train, Genova-Ventimiglia, €9.30. Regional train, Ventimiglia-Nice, €6.40. (The total, €40.20, is a little higher than what is listed on Larry's link.)
On the night train the standard fare for a bunk in a 6-person couchette is €37.00, and for a bunk in a 4-person couchette it is €43.60.
Popular night trains can sell out weeks in advance. I don't know how popular the Rome-Genoa night train is. Rail Europe doesn't even list it on its Web site. You might be fine waiting until you get to Rome to book it. Buy your Genoa-Ventimiglia and Ventimiglia-Nice tickets when you get to Rome.
