Going to Chamonix, France by train. Then want to cross to Italy. Was thinking of taking cable car over to Italy . they now are saying the cable car/gondola over to italy will be closed in june 2014 for renovation. If it were open , can you take luggsge on cable car any way? If no cable car, is there train to Cormayeur Italy. If have to take bus, is it simple and can you take luggage on the bus. Thanks Also thinking of renting car in Italy , as we leave from Rome. Is it true, renting and dropping off car within the same country is a lot cheaper..

The smaller gondola over to Italy is closed until next year. We wanted to do that a couple of years ago but the cable car over to Italy closed a couple of weeks earlier. Not sure about the luggage. We wanted to make it a day trip since we had a rental car in Chamonix. There is a bus from Chamonix to Courmayeur. Try this link. http://www.chamonix.com/pdf/bus-chamonix-courmayeur-ete-2013.pdf

As you can see on the link Larry gave you, you can travel by bus all the way from Chamonix to Milan. Yes, dropping off a car in the same country in which you picked it up is much cheaper. No stiff international drop off fee.
