We are starting a trip in Prague in late April. From there we plan to go to Vienna, Salzburg, Hallstatt, Reutte then Lucerne. We were going to rent a car in Salzburg then drive to Hallstatt, Reutte and Lucerne but to return to a different country costs nearly as much as the rental. Any transportation suggestions out there(itinerary change)? Thanks.
You could use the train. From Salzburg to Reutte is only €27, total, for two to five people with a Bayern-Ticket. Also, if you go from Reutte to Luzern via Munich, you can get a €29 Europa-Spezial fare from DB for the 12:34 Eurocity train from Munich to Zürich.
Thanks Lee. What is the DB? I appreciate your help.
Sorry. You are new at this. DB stands for Deutsche Bahn, which is German Rail. They have a general information website at www.bahn.de, and a webpage for schedule and fare info at http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en.
The Bayern (Bavarian) Ticket is an all day pass allowing you (up to five people) unlimited use of regional trains in Bavaria all day from midnight weekends or 9 AM weekdays. Salzburg and Kufstein are considered border stations up to which the Ticket is valid. It is also valid on the Ausserfernbahn, which runs through the Austrian Tirol from Garmisch-Partenkirchen through Reutte to Pfronten. You can see more information on the Bayern-Ticket at www.bayern-takt.de. Unless you want a challenge, click on "Englische Version" in the banner.
Hi Richard,
If you'd like the flexability of the car for Austria, why not drop it off in Innsbruck, then train to Lucerne? You aviod drop off fees and it's great to have a car in these parts of Austria.
Paul
Thanks Paul. Great suggestion. That would work well.
